Better Than One
Tithing Counts

Have you ever known a person who refuses to watch pre-season football, even thought he is an avid fan? He feels that if the games don't count in the permanent record, then why play them? Sadly, we could argue that 80% of life's activities don't really count. Errands to run, schedules to keep and obligations to meet fill our days and calendars, but how many days or activities really count?

What does count? In one of the strongest warnings Jesus gave, He reminds us that "...where our treasure is there will our hearts be also" (Luke 12:34 NIV). Our relationship to money is a keen indicator of our spiritual priorities. Our decision about tithing reveals much about what we believe really counts.

Tithing counts as proof that our acknowledgement of God is honest and measurable. Abraham first instituted the tithe as a reminder that without God's help we could not survive or succeed (Genesis 14:18-20)

Tithing counts as a standard that has been established to keep our priorities straight. god claims first place in our lives and the tithe is holy to Him (Leviticus 27:30). When we ask what is required, or where to start or how much is enough, the tithe has found approval from both God and men.

Tithing counts as an assurance that our relationship with God is fresh and growing. The prophet Malachi's complaint was not so much a financial indictment as it was a plea for personal repentance (Malachi 3:7). Our tithes should grow in proportion to our income, and that requires a deeper level of devotion day by day.

Tithing counts as a witness to those who know us best. Few things speak as loudly as money. The way we apportion our money readily identifies our values. The family that sets aside ten percent for God's work through his church presents a witness to others of what is valuable. Malachi promises that when we tithe, "all nations shall call you blessed" (Malachi 3:14 NIV), and Jesus reminds us that tithing ought to be connected with mercy and justice (Matthew 23:23).

Tithing counts as an investment in eternity. The writer of Hebrews identifies Christ as an eternal priest in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:1 - 19). When we tithe through His church we identify with Christ's priesthood, and we express our desire to participate in His kingdom, which lasts forever.

You can help church members discover these assurances and experience spiritual growth by conducting the "Tithing Counts" tither's enlistment emphasis. The simple, three Sunday format has been used by churches with outstanding success. "Tithing Counts" requires very little advance preparation and can be scheduled at any time of the year.
