Messengers Vote to Shorten Annual Meetings
Release Date: 11/13/2007

ELIZABETHTOWN – Kentucky Baptist messengers today approved a motion for future annual meeting business to be conducted on a single day.

The motion was made by Charles Barnes, chairman of the Committee on Order of Business, during the Tuesday morning session of the 170th annual meeting at Severns Valley Baptist Church.

According to Barnes, the motion authorizes the convention to conduct all business in one day, with the option of a second day for workshops or other activities as needed. Regardless of whether or not a second day is used, convention business will now conclude each year on Tuesday evening.

“The committee has been considering this for a period of time, and we feel this is the way we should recommend future conventions to you,” said Barnes.

According to Barnes, the reason for the proposed change was a lack of attendance during Wednesday morning sessions in previous years. The Convention has been unable to conduct business due to a lack of quorum the past three years, he said.

At least 25 percent of the messengers registered on Tuesday must attend the Wednesday session in order for quorum to be established. Official convention business cannot occur without quorum.

The change will be effective beginning with the 2008 annual meeting, scheduled to be held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington on Nov. 11.
