However, comparing it to the best efforts of KBC churches in the past decade reveals that churches can reach the goal simply by “doing their best.”
Dan Garland, KBC Church Development/Evangelism Team leader, reviewed baptism statistics for the past 10 years and discovered that by taking the highest number of baptisms in a single year for each KBC church and adding them all up, the total exceeded 40,000 baptisms, well above the target set at last November’s annual meeting.
“I was shocked it was that much,” says Garland, noting that last year’s total was just under 18,000. “I had them run the numbers three times to make sure it was accurate. We have voted to connect churches and individuals to reach the unchurched in Kentucky. The Barna Study introduced a new term to me - "de-churched." The de-churched are those who once attended church, but no longer attend. There are a large number of these in Kentucky. Because Baptists are the largest denomination in the state, a large number of the de-churched are Baptists. I like to play with numbers, and I was fascinated with the study. They identified de-churched as those who have not attended in the last six months except for Easter. The percentage, as you would guess, was huge. I had a variety of responses as I listened to those who where being interviewed. I was shocked. I was angry. I was concerned. I was sympathetic. I was moved almost to tears. | Dr. Mackey: Connect Launch Exceeded Expectations | The launch of Kentucky Baptists Connect at the KBC Annual Meeting exceeded my expectations.
