THIBODAUXThe Kentucky Baptist Convention’s Disaster Relief units previously staged in Clinton, Miss., are now on their way to Thibodaux, La., to begin providing relief to residents affected by Hurricane Gustav.

According to Coy Webb, disaster relief associate for the KBC, the KBC originally deployed the kitchen, shower and communications units on Aug. 31. The teams were stationed in Clinton to enable a quick response to the Gulf Coast after the storm had passed.

Once they arrive in Thibodaux, Webb said the volunteers will be stationed at University Baptist Church are prepared to provide “as many as 30,000 meals a day.”

It is uncertain how long the teams will be needed to provide relief, he said, but the KBC is already working to coordinate a team of 20 additional volunteers to replace the team, beginning Sunday, Sept. 7.

Thirty-four volunteers from across Kentucky are currently participating in the effort, representing Ashland, Bowling Green, Frankfort, Greenup, Hopkinsville, Louisville, Monticello, Nicholasville, Paducah, Radcliff, Russellville, Taylorsville and Springfield.
According to Webb, the KBC’s response efforts are part of a larger Southern Baptist Disaster Relief initiative being executed in cooperation with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Department of Homeland Security and other state Baptist conventions.
